Share.Hither returned Conan of Cimmeria.ByIt's hard not to react to news of Marvel reacquiring the rights to the Conan franchise with mixed emotions. On one hand, Conan used to be a huge, vital part of Marvel's publishing lineup. Not to mention how well the Star Wars franchise has fared since returning to Marvel. But on the other hand, Dark Horse has been doing great work with the property for the past 15 years.

What can Marvel bring to the table that hasn't already been done at this point? Fortunately, makes a pretty convincing argument for the latest Conan shake-up.If nothing else, it may have been worth bringing Conan back to Marvel solely to see what magic this new creative team can weave with the character. Writer Jason Aaron is a very natural fit for this book. His work inherently has that unique blend of humor, over-the-top imagination and brutality that make for a good Conan yarn. And in hindsight, Aaron's work on 2015's short-lived Weirdworld revival reads like a proof-of-concept for Conan the Barbarian. Aaron's script has a very classical feel to it, though one with just enough flavor and wit to carve a unique voice amid the thousands of other Conan comics published y Marvel and Dark Horse.Mahmud Asrar proves equally at home in the Hyborian Age.
His figure work is classic Conan, delivering powerful, muscular barbarians, alluring femmes fatale and grotesque monsters. There's a terrific sense of grit to the characters and their environments, particularly as the story moves and veers from combat towards a more horror-centric approach. Colorist Matthew Wilson expertly captures that ancient yet vital sensation of Conan's world. Right out of the gate, this new series captures the raw visual appeal of early Dark Horse-era artists like Cary Nord.So what makes this book stand out beyond the extremely competent creative team? It's mostly the sensation that we as readers are settling in for a very different sort of Conan tale, one with more far-reaching ambitions than most. Age of Conan is, without a doubt, a very large game. With features like guild vs. Guild siege combat that have yet to be experienced by the players, there is a lot left to review. And, as with all MMOs, every patch and update means the game will constantly be improved, tweaked, and refined.
Howard's Conan saga. The core comic in its various forms was devoted to moving through Conan's life chronologically and ensuring that every story (be it full-fledged pulp novella or unpublished fragment) was given its place.That's clearly not what Aaron and Asrar are attempting to do here. This story stands apart because it unfolds in multiple time periods at once. We get a brief recap of Conan's 'Born on the Battlefield' origin story before the setting shifts to the wandering barbarian in his prime.
Then the setting shifts again to the King Conan days. All of this material is linked both in terms of plot points and a larger thematic emphasis on life and death. This approach is somewhat reminiscent of Aaron's early Thor work and the way three different incarnations of the Odinson were untied in one adventure.
